  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 30 ounces crushed tomatoes (2 cans of 15 ounces each)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil (optional) For garnish

Method

Cooking
  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer the sauce for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Adjust seasoning as needed and serve over cooked spaghetti. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator or freeze for up to 3 months. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender after simmering. Consider adding bell peppers or mushrooms for added nutrition and flavor, or red pepper flakes for heat. For a meatier sauce, brown ground beef or sausage before adding the onions and garlic.
