  • 4 large large potatoes, thinly sliced Use a starchy variety for the best texture.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • 1 cup grated cheese E.g., Gruyère or cheddar; combine different types for flavor.
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped Fresh basil recommended for the best flavor.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust based on personal preference.
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for greasing baking dish Can be replaced with cooking spray.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
Layering
  1. Layer half of the potato slices in the dish and sprinkle half of the minced garlic, basil, salt, and pepper over the potatoes.
  2. Add half of the cheese on top.
  3. Repeat the layers with the remaining potato slices, garlic, basil, salt, and pepper, finishing with the remaining cheese.
  4. Pour the heavy cream over the layered potatoes.
Baking
  1. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  3. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve hot from the oven. For storage, let cool completely and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
